International Women’s Day Spotlight: Annalise Lawn
Today’s IWD Spotlight is on Annalise Lawn. Annalise is a talented artist who specialises in watercolour pet portraits, along with other playful, pet-inspired creations at Annalise Paints.
Annalise, what inspired you to pursue your creative passion?
During the pandemic, a neighbour of mine challenged me to a ‘paint-off’, which led me to start painting all the pets on our street. I dropped the paintings off in people's letter boxes as a ‘just because’ gift. After that, my sister convinced me I should start an Instagram to show off my work, which really kicked it all off.
How do you stay motivated, especially during the more challenging times in your career?
As an artist who struggles with anxiety, my self-doubt often shows up in that "what on earth am I doing?" question. Luckily, I have a supportive network of friends, family, and my partner, who remind me of all I have achieved.
On days when I don't feel up to it, I go for a walk, or go out to do something else—there is no point in forcing it when your brain isn't in it. For me, that works as a little reset, and I always feel better for it after.
What advice would you give to other women who want to pursue their creative endeavours?
Reach out to those who inspire you. You never know—you could even become friends. Running your own business can be lonely at times, but being surrounded by incredible women who are doing the same thing makes it so much better, and so much more powerful.
