International Women’s Day Spotlight: Donna Kavanagh
Donna Kavanagh is the business owner of Comfy Tails, a bespoke pet accessory business based in Melbourne. Alongside her daughter, Alice—the founder of Al Elé—the mother-daughter duo create every accessory from scratch in their home studio.
Donna, what inspired you to pursue your creative passion?
I started Comfy Tails because I was looking for a dog bed for my dog, Lulu. But I didn’t love what I was seeing—they only seemed to come in brown, were really expensive, and made of synthetic fabric, which I don't like. So, I decided to make one, and see how it went. One thing led to another, and next thing I knew, I was starting Comfy Tails.
How do you stay motivated, especially during the more challenging times in your career?
I have to have a to-do list in front of me, and see that list getting done.
Also, I’m motivated and inspired by my daughter, Alice, because she is a driven woman with a lot of passion.
I’m proud that we built everything ourselves, from scratch, down to the market stalls that we trade from.
So remembering how far our businesses have come is motivating to remember, too.
What advice would you give to other women who want to pursue their creative endeavours?
Just do it. No one's going to do it for you. If it makes you happy, you have to do it.
Even if it's really boring sometimes—for example, maybe there's just so much ironing involved in what you're doing, and you can't stand ironing—just get through it because it's on your to-do list.
And while you're doing it, remember to do right by others. You can make your business idea work, and create an income, through honesty and integrity.
